Westport named Ireland's Tidiest Large Town

There was cause for celebration for Westport today (Monday, September 25) when it was named as Ireland's Tidiest Large Town at the 2017 Tidy Town Awards, which were announced in the The Helix in Dublin.  Westport's Pat Scahill was also named as the winner of the Overall National Hero Awards at the ceramony.

The annual celebration of gastronomy that is Westport Food Festival takes place from Friday, June 23, to Sunday, June 25. The organisers are promising a programme with something for all ages, from mini chefs right up to fully fledged foodies. The highlight of the busy festival weekend is an exclusive Midsummer Banquet at Westport House. After Westport going all the way to glory at All Ireland level in this grade in the spring, there is plenty of inspiration for the 16 sides in the mix for this year's intermediate championship. In group one the Belmullet, Ardnaree, Ballyhaunis and Parke are involved in a fascinating four way tussle for progression to the next round. On Sunday, Belmullet and Ardnaree will meet in Erris, while Pake will travel to east Mayo. While there won't be too much between these sides, Belmullet and Ballyhaunis should come out on top.

Easter fundraising concert for Westport Town Hall

Local musical protégée Richard Hughes neatly combines his Westport 250 celebration with the rediscovery of Westport composer Jane Anne MacDonnell in a gala fundraising evening at Westport Town Hall. The programme includes Jane Anne MacDonnell’s Quadrilles, the premiere of Richard Hughes composition celebrating Westport 250 and music by Mozart and Haydn. The entire proceeds of the night are in aid of the Town Hall. This exceptional musical evening takes place on Easter Sunday, April 16, at 8pm.
